WHAT ARE YOU STUDYING AND/OR WHAT ARE YOUR PROFESSIONAL AMBITIONS?

I completed the technical writing certificate at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 2020. With my training, I can write and format technical documentation such as manuals, training materials, and any other materials a company may need tailored to a specific audience. My schooling sparked my interest in knowledge translation and mobilization. Since then, I’ve joined the CHILD-BRIGHT Knowledge Mobilization Committee and Policy Hub. I’ve been taking courses and plan to get a degree in Public Health. With these skills and experiences, I hope to make a difference in my community. In addition to my academic ambitions, I enjoy more informal writing outlets, such as blogging, social media, and content writing. I plan to make my passion for writing, communication, and community into a career.

WHAT ARE YOUR PASSIONS, INTERESTS, AND HOBBIES?

I run my own blog/online store called Spastic & Fantastic. My goal on this platform is to share my life and bring attention to the stigmas that society puts on labels, such as “disabled.” Other than that, I love spending time with my friends, family, and dog!

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH BRAIN-BASED DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES?

I have cerebral palsy (CP). Having CP has impacted every aspect of my life, from the way I see the world to how I interact with it. As I was born with this disability, neither myself nor my loved ones have known anything different.

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT CHILD-BRIGHT?

From my volunteer supervisor at Sunny Hill Health Centre.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO GET INVOLVED WITH CHILD-BRIGHT?

I have a passion for youth involvement and advocacy. I learned the importance of personal involvement and self-advocacy from my years of being a patient and navigating a world that isn’t made for people like me. Additionally, being disabled makes it harder for me to find work; being a member of the NYAC is great for my resume, and the compensation I receive helps me live.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE NATIONAL YOUTH ADVocACY COUNCIL?

My personal goal is to connect with people who share similar values and experiences and contribute to creating an environment where everyone feels acknowledged. As for the NYAC, I hope that it continues to allow people's experiences to be valued and considered in health policy, research, and other related fields.
